Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Lima. Transfer to hotel.
Magical Peru Expeditions staff will greet you at the Lima airport and take you to your airport hotel.
Lima is where you’ll spend the night.
Day 2: Arrival in Cusco
Magical Peru Expeditions will arrange you a private shuttle from your accommodation to the airport in time for your trip to Cusco. A Magical Peru Expeditions agent will greet you at the Cusco airport and transport you to the historic center.
You’ll arrive at your hotel about midday and have the rest of the day to relax and explore. Because Cusco is at a height of 11,300 feet, you may want to take it easy on the first day to acclimate. Nonetheless, this is an excellent opportunity to explore the main center, with its many cafés and shops, or maybe to visit a museum. There are several alternatives for both casual and sophisticated eating.
Day 3: Cusco City Tour
Take your time in the morning. This is an excellent time to visit some of Cusco’s lesser-known sites, such as the famed San Pedro Market, the bohemian enclave of San Blas, or one of the city’s many superb museums.
A professional guide will take you to some of the world’s top ancient sites in the afternoon, including the stunning Cusco Cathedral, the holy Temple of the Sun or Qoricancha, and the impressive Sacsayhuaman citadel. You’ll return to your Cusco hotel in the late afternoon. Spend the evening at your leisure, taking in the native food, music, and the nighttime glory of Cusco.
Day 4: Sacred Valley Tour
A full-day trip of the magnificent Sacred Valley, home to multiple royal estates of Incan emperors, allows you to see the lovely Peruvian landscape. The first stop will be at Pisac, which is known for its vibrant indigenous market and the spectacular Incan ruins on the hillside above the city. Following your tour to Pisac, you will stop for lunch (not included) at a buffet restaurant in the town of Urubamba, which is named for the holy river that runs through the area.
Following that, you will see the magnificent stronghold of Ollantaytambo. These spectacular Incan remains were part of the Incan monarch Pachacuti’s royal domain. You will then be transferred to your lovely accommodation in the Sacred Valley. If you’ve chosen an Ollantaytambo hotel, you may spend your time visiting the old Incan town at your leisure.
Day 5: Tour of Machu Picchu
Take a train from your Sacred Valley accommodation to Machu Picchu, the secret Inca fortress, after breakfast. This train ride is among the best in the world. Much of the route follows the flowing Vilcanota River and twists through gorges carved into the sides of enormous mountainsides, providing passengers with spectacular vistas of the Andean environment as the train descends from high-altitude plains into the cloud forest. The vegetation changes considerably as the train nears the meeting point of the Andes and the Upper Amazon rainforest, giving passengers an up-close picture of one of the world’s most magnificent transitions.
You will be welcomed at the train station in Aguas Calientes and escorted to the bus station for a 20-minute trip up to the remote fortress.
Then, meet your professional English-speaking guide for a tour of Machu Picchu’s most prominent monuments, including the Intihuatana (Sun Stone) and the Sun Temple. Machu Picchu is rightfully regarded as one of the world’s “must-see” archeological monuments. Royal palaces, temples, and astronomical observatories cling to a granite spur above the valley floor, providing breathtaking vistas of the cloud-wreathed Andes and the Urubamba River far below.
Take a few more shots of the remains before boarding the shuttle bus back to town and returning to your Aguas Calientes hotel for a well-deserved night of relaxation. Book a spa treatment at your hotel or bathe in the natural hot springs if you so choose.
Day 6: Tour of Machu Picchu
Prepare for another dose of Machu Picchu. On day two at the site, take in the natural beauty of the area and learn about other myths and unique structural design components.
Hiking Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Montana is a popular way to gain a bird’s eye perspective of the ruins. Permits are very restricted and must be reserved in advance, so let your travel adviser know as soon as possible if you’re interested so they can verify availability. Exploring another circuit of the archeological site with your guide is a more leisurely choice.
After seeing Machu Picchu, take the shuttle bus back to Aguas Calientes to catch the train back to Cusco. Meet your driver at the airport for transport to your hotel.
Day 7: Departure from Cusco
Following breakfast at your hotel, one of our agents will meet you there and transport you to the airport for your flight home or to your next destination.
Alternatively, you may extend your Peru holiday by choosing one of our other thrilling Cusco tours or Sacred Valley excursions, or by browsing our entire variety of Peru travel locations.
