Itinerary for the Two-Day Train Tour of the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu

As Peru’s Sacred Valley, also known as Urubamba Valley, is a vast valley of incomparable beauty and storied land that stretches from Cusco to Machu Picchu, with small towns and ancient Inca archaeological sites, one day is not enough to see all of the valley’s highlights, so we have divided it into two options for you to visit and enjoy it properly. Choose the Sacred Valley itinerary that fits your vacation plans the best from the two available options. The Sacred Valley is home to incomparable splendor and Inca treasures.

Option 01: Via Pisac (Alpaca farm, Pisac ruins, Pisac market and Ollantaytambo).

We will pick you up from your hotel lobby at 07:00 am in Cusco for your 2-day Machu Picchu and Sacred Valley tour. Then we’ll take towards Pisac. We will visit Awana Cancha where you see (Alpacas, Lamas, Vicuña, and Huanacos), Pisac archaeological site, Pisac market, and Ollantaytambo archaeological site. Halfway there we will have lunch at Urubamba, after lunch can visit the brewery (optional) and then visit the Ollantaytambo archaeological center. After touring Ollantaytambo, we will catch the train to Aguas Calientes at 3:37 or 7:30 pm, subject to availability. After arriving in Aguas Calientes, we will check in at the hotel, overnight in Aguas Calientes town.

Option 02: Via Chinchero(Chinchero, Maras, Moray, Salt mines, and Ollantaytambo)

To start the 2-Day Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu Tour from Cusco by Chinchero, we will also pick you up at 07:00 from your hotel. The tour begins with a visit to the Chinchero textile center, the famous colonial-style church, and archaeological ruins. Here, we will visit a local family at Chinchero town where you will be given a demonstration of the Andean textiles that have been passed down to all of them from generations since Inca times. You will also have the opportunity to shop from the local families.

Then, we drive over dirt roads to the ruins of Moray through lush agricultural fields and small rural communities with spectacular views of snowcapped peaks. After visiting Moray, we will head to the town of Moray to enjoy lunch (Not included). Following lunch, we continue our way to Maras Salt Ponds. Here your tour guide explains how salt is harvested and the importance of salt for economic exchange since Inca times. Each town offers its own unique view of life and traditions established long ago.

Finally, we visit the impressive ruins overlooking the ancient village of Ollantaytambo. These magnificent ruins serve as an outpost that dominates the village, and if you are up for the short climb, offer an incredible view of the Sacred Valley. During the height of the Inca Empire, the ruins were the royal domain of Emperor Pachacuti and later an important stronghold of the Manco Inca Yupanqui during the last Inca revolt against the Spaniards.

The village of Ollantaytambo has some interesting little architectural features that you shouldn’t miss. For example, in some side streets, you will find a solid head like a drain hose. Combined with the village’s history and ruins, these features make this town a prime destination in the Sacred Valley.

After touring the Sacred Valley of the Incas, we enjoyed dinner (not included) at Ollantaytambo town before catching the 7 pm train. The train ride to Aguas Calientes takes less than two hours. Upon arrival at Aguas Calientes, you will check into your beautiful and comfortable hotel room. Your guide will then tell you the schedule of your visit to Machu Picchu the next day.

Day 02: Machu Picchu – Cusco

This is the Magical Day to Machu Picchu! After an early breakfast at your hotel, you’ll catch one of the first buses to Machu Picchu to watch the sunrise. It’s a really great site and not something you want to miss! Your guide will take you on the full tour, which takes about two hours. You will see all the most important parts of Machu Picchu including the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Condors, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Sundial, the Quarry, and the Inca House. You’ll also discover how Machu Picchu is divided into three zones: agricultural, residential, and religious.

After your tour, those who pre-book an additional hike to Huayna Picchu or Mount Machu Picchu will have time to enjoy these views to themselves. Once you have marveled at the extraordinary views of Machu Picchu, you’ll get off the bus back to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included). Depending on the train departure time, you may also have time to shop, visit, or visit a museum or hot spring. Your train will leave at 2:55 or 3:20 pm.

The train takes you back to Ollantaytambo, along the spectacular Urubamba River. Near Aguas Calientes, the narrow gorge and river have some beautiful stretches of white water. You can also see the Wiñay Wayna from the train, if you look up at the steep canyon wall! Returning to Ollantaytambo, your driver will meet you at the exit of the train station to take you back to your hotel in Cusco our transportation will take you to your Hotel.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Best Time

Machu Picchu is open year-round, with October to April being the official rainy season. The heaviest rains are in February, which is also when the Inca trails are closed because landslides are possible and the experience for hikers will not be very good, but also when you will have The stronghold is almost to itself, but it can rain year-round. The peak tourist season is July and August, as part of the dry season, you will join thousands of other visitors in long lines to enter the ruins and catch the bus. Peruvians are free to enter Machu Picchu on Sundays, so crowds will be larger on Sundays.

Bathrooms

Bad news, there are no toilets or eateries in Machu Picchu. Make sure to use the bathroom before entering the venue. It is located right in front of the entrance and has a two-stand rack.

Food and Drink

When it comes to food and water, bring your own. The ticket says it’s forbidden to eat inside this area, but you can bring some snacks with you, just try not to overeat, and it doesn’t say you shouldn’t throw it away. Also,  bring your water in reusable water bottles or canteens, as Machu Picchu is trying to fight single-use plastic bottles.

Important Things You Should Know

• Under the new rules, you can only stay in the Machu Picchu area for four hours, but it is nearly impossible to enforce this rule unless visitors are harassed the whole time by people security guards who should ask them repeatedly. The time they arrive (this rule should be stricter).
• When visiting Machu Picchu, you must bring your passport, as you will need your passport to enter the venue.
• With a standard Machu Picchu admission ticket, you will not be allowed to return after exiting, even if you do not spend the allotted 4 hours on each ticket. However, following the path through the ruins usually does not take hours. A full guided tour usually lasts only 2-3 hours.
• With a ticket for Machu Picchu Mount Machu Picchu and Mount Machu Picchu Huayna Picchu, you can head out after hiking to buy water and use the bathroom, then return with your guide to visit the city.

• Be careful with selfies and jump shots, as they are the cause of most accidents in the mountains.
• Park rangers invite you to withdraw from Mount Huayna Picchu  at 12:30pm and from Mount Machu Picchu  at 12pm.
• Lightweight training or walking shoes are strongly recommended.
• Strong insect repellent recommended.
• Machu Picchu is a one-of-a-kind site, and if you want, you can get a rather strange stamp on your passport.
• Prohibited items are not allowed inside Machu Picchu
• Walking sticks unless the person needs them.
• It is also forbidden to enter Machu Picchu by drone, climbing pole, tripod or selfie stick. Elderly people can carry a cane, but with a rubber end, not a metal one.
• Professional cameras are not allowed. Licenses for professional cameras cost up to $300, so avoid bringing a pro camera to save money.
• You cannot enter Machu Picchu with your travel backpack. Only smaller models are allowed, so leave your backpack in Aguas Calientes at your hotel.
