You will next proceed to the fascinating Maras, salt mines, a centuries-old site that is still in operation today as a small-scale salt-producing plant. Wander around the maze of salt pools as your guide explains the extraction method and the importance of salt in the local economy. Itinerary

MORAY AND MARAS SALT POOLS – HALF-DAY ITINERARY

We will organize a pick-up from your accommodation at 07:30 a.m. in our comfortable transportation for the Moray and Maras Salt Mines Tour. You’ll get the opportunity to appreciate the magnificent Andean scenery abounding with lush plants and different fauna as we go to Moray and the Maras salt mines.

Our first visit will be to the amazing Moray archaeological site, which is around 38 kilometers from Cusco. Moray, known as an Inca agricultural laboratory, displays its distinctive design in concentric rings. The site has four platforms, or circular terraces, with the deepest depression reaching a depth of 80 meters and the smallest terrace being 36 meters in diameter.

Temperature fluctuations per level range from 0.5 to 1.5 degrees Celsius on these terraces. Within the terraces themselves, this innovative architecture provides up to 20 different microclimates. Experts believe that this innovative design was meant to cultivate crops that would not normally grow in the surrounding area.

Maras Salt Mines tour

Then we’ll go to the Maras salt mines. These are salt mines, as the name implies, made up of around 3,000 tiny pools that produce 50 to 80 kg of salt per pool every season. These salt mines are claimed to have supplied salt to Cusco and its neighboring areas during the Inca period. An underground saline spring feeds the pools. Each pool takes around two months to fill with salt using this natural technique. The Maras salt is widely sought after, with the pink mineral salt being the best grade. This salt has therapeutic effects as well, so don’t forget to pick up some goods produced from it along the route.

Without a doubt, both of these locations are rich in history and intriguing information, which our guide will share with you along the way. After viewing these amazing monuments, our vehicle will pick us up and take us back to Cusco. The journey will complete at about 2:00 p.m., bringing our Moray and Maras Salt Mines journey to a close.
